A circular route

In 2106 I ‘retired’ my Nikon D7100 DSLR as I switched brands and went to mirrorless cameras, with both Fujifilm, (APS-C) and Olympus (Micro 4/3).

In 2023 I bought a Fujifilm X-T30 with the intent of it becoming my main landscaping camera. No problem with the image quality but I soon realised that, for me, the handling was problematic.

At the beginning of 2024 I sold the X-T30 and two XF lenses and bought a Nikon Z50. I added the Z DX 18-140mm and Z DX 12-28mm lenses so now I have a APS-C kit with the handling I wanted. I lost a few megapixels along the way but I am OK with that.

Photography gear

This pouch goes in my rucksack when I am out taking landscapes. It is part camera cleaning kit, part tool kit and also emergency camera kit. For cleaning there is a lens pen, two microfibre cloths and lens wipes. The tools are two filter wrenches and a allen wrench/screwdriver multi tool. For ’emergencies’ there is a camera rain cover, an SD card and a micro SD card and a USB C card reader & pen drive should I need to back up a card on the go using my phone.

Digital History – Nikon

On the left is my Nikon Coolpix 5000, this was my first digital camera (2003-2005) when I moved from film and is still one of the most complex menu systems I had to navigate.

Second left is my Nikon D70 (2005-2007) and my first DSLR. The press raved about it on it’s release but it seems very dated now.

Third from the left is my Nikon D200 (2007-2014), oh how I loved this camera, especially the ergonomics of its design.

Finally, on the right is my Nikon D7100 (2014-2017). An absolutely outstanding camera, but it had the misfortune to end up in early retirement because I needed to lighten the load and switched to mirrorless cameras.

Two Old Timers

These two film cameras are a nostalgia trip for me. I used to own both but sold them to fund upgrades. So, out of nostalgia, I bought both of these via eBay in recent years, plus one of the lenses seen here.

On the left, we have a Nikon FG with Tamron 35-70mm Adaptall 2 lens. This was my first Nikon and with the lens, this was a great combination.

On the right is a Nikon F301 with Tamron 35-135mm Adaptall 2 lens. In the early 90s, this was my travel/holiday camera and lens (along with a Sigma 24mm lens).

Amongst the big beasts

On the left is my Nikon D200, 35-70mm Nikkor and battery grip. This was my main camera from 2006 to 2014 and is still the camera I used the most and for the longest.

On the right is my Nikon D2x with Sigma 10-20mm. My late father-in-law bought this used camera for me around 2016 as a thank you for reviving his very sick laptop and saving the data on it.

In the centre is my Olympus OM-D E-M1 ii with 12-40mm Pro lens which is my current main camera. As I get older, I increasingly value small size & light weight in my camera gear!

Photo/Video Editing

For editing photo’s, I mainly use Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop (monthly Photography Plan) and occasionally I use Luminar 4. For black & white I use the Silver Efex Pro 2 plugin.

For colour my workflow is usually as follows:

  • Import RAW files into Lightroom
  • View the files and score the ones I will edit with 3 to 5 stars (I don’t bother scoring less, if it’s not at least 3 stars I move on)
  • Use Lightroom to make basic adjustments for noise reduction, sharpening, white balance, cropping, contrast curve, highlights & shadows and ND gradient mask and remove any blemishes, e.g., dust spots. File marked in Lightroom as ‘Yellow’ (my way of indicating it is ready for Photoshop)
  • Export to Photoshop for any cloning out of people/objects etc. and final adjustments. On saving & closing the Photoshop file is also visible in Lightroom and the file is marked as ‘Green’ (my way of indicating it is now all work completed, ready for output)
  • Export to Jpeg or printing is from Lightroom.

For video I use Corel VideoStudio and Insta360 Video Studio and I am still pretty low on the learning curve.
